Arsenal supporters have reacted to Albert Sambi Lokonga’s assertions that his favourite position to play is as a ‘number eight,’ since it allows him to ‘attack’ and then ‘defend with freedom,’ according to the Metro.
Arsenal bought the 21-year-old from Belgian team Anderlecht this summer. Anderlecht is famed for bringing through top-quality midfield technical players, like Leicester City’s Youri Tielemans.
Arsenal fans may have anticipated him to play a more defensive role, which he has done and may continue to do.
However, it appears that the 21-year-old loves the more offensive side of the game, which gives Arsenal’s midfield more bite.
“I like to be No. 8 so I can attack and I can defend with more freedom,” said Lokonga.
“That’s what I like. But I also like [playing as] six so it’s difficult. I like both but the most important thing for me is to be on the pitch.”
Arsenal fans have reacted to Lokonga’s statements in a variety of ways, with some questioning how they will set up in midfield in the long run.
Partey has returned from injury, and Xhaka is set to return from suspension, while Odegaard and Smith Rowe are more attack-minded players.
Arteta now has a lot of options, and he can adjust his approach to be more offensive or defensive.
However, other Arsenal supporters believe it demonstrates the club’s need for a true defensive player like Bissouma.
One thing is certain: Arsenal’s midfield alternatives are far superior to what Arteta had to choose from when he first arrived at the club.
It’s now all about being patient with what they have because if Partey and Lokonga both erupt at the same time, the squad will be catapulted to new heights.
