Who is Ezego, the King of Money and how did he die?

    Ezego

The Eze Ego (King of Money) a.k.a. Udu Bunch a.k.a. The Young Millionaire is Chief Victor Nnamdi Okafor.

This story is about an Igbo tycoon who died unexpectedly just as he was about to celebrate his birthday.

Many Nigerians’ eyes light up with excitement when you hear Ezego, King of Money.

In Africa, he would have been a billionaire. His fat cheeks danced with hot smiles, accented by a not-too-bushy moustache. His plump cheeks were enhanced by a not-too-bushy moustache, and he was fair-skinned and talked quietly.

He was still a young man, but he was well-known and respected in Nigerian economic circles at the time.

The topic of this narrative is Chief Victor Nnamdi Okafor, the Eze Ego (King of Money) of Ihiala aka Udu Bunch aka The Young Millionaire, an Igbo magnate who died tragically just before his birthday.

EARLY DAYS, EDUCATION AND GROWING UP:

On December 25, 1964, the late Ezego, the first son and native of Uzoakwa, Ihiala in Anambra State, was born. Ezego’s story is one of Nigeria’s most well-known rags-to-riches tales.

He went to Uzoakwa Primary School for primary school but was forced to drop out of Abbot Boys’ High School in Ihiala for secondary school and eventually entered the workforce.

His childhood was horrific, and his own father reportedly disowned him after he was jailed for being a member of a robbery gang that showed Onitsha traders misery on earth. Despite the fact that several of his gangmates were captured and sentenced, Ezego fled to Umumeni Village, where he was supposedly chased out by his irate father.

He then travelled to Umuduru, his mother’s village. However, things did not go well for him in Umuduru, so in 1989 he relocated to Lagos to work with a mentor.

    BUSINESS EMPIRE:

Story Of Ezego, The Billionaire Whose Properties Were Abandoned After His Death

What transpired after that is unknown, but Ezego was already a multimillionaire and one of Lagos’s crème de la crème by the time the world heard of him again.

He constructed the Ezego Shopping Complex on Allen Avenue in Lagos (which also has a branch in Abuja) and the Ezego Plaza on the Murtala Muhammed International Airport Road in Abuja. From these sites, he ran and managed one of Nigeria’s largest electronics stores.

His other firms included Vic-Winners International Limited, Ezego Nigeria Limited, Ezego Holdings Limited, Vitex Zinc Co. Limited, and Ezego Properties Limited. Ezego built residences, villas, and mansions all over the world, including one that was entirely made of glass.

In 1999, the total worth of his real estate outside of Ihiala was estimated to be over half a billion naira.

The huge villa that served as his country residence in Ihiala was worth another N500 million thanks to the imported marble installed for the walls.

At the time of his death, Ezego owned one of Africa’s largest private automobile garages. He was an automobile aficionado who was often buying new models for his garages in Ihiala and Lagos.

He once paid N14 million for a Lincoln Continental Mark 8 sedan and a Mercedes Benz R230 convertible, both from Moontrends and owned by Tayo Ayeni.

In actuality, he left behind a variety of high-end autos, 70 residences in Nigeria and abroad, and over N10 billion in his bank account when he died.

He married Laurita Nkechi, a fair-complexioned and attractive princess from Akata in Imo State, and they had eight children. After her husband’s death, Princess Nkechi relocated to Lekki from Ajao Estate, where she had been residing with him.

As of December 2013, she was raising her husband’s economic empire to new heights, according to reports, with her children attending top colleges throughout the world.

By the way, Ezego’s first son was born to a Japanese mother. He fathered children with other women in addition to his wife, Nkechi.

    THE ACCIDENT:

Story Of Ezego, The Billionaire Whose Properties Were Abandoned After His Death

Ezego set out for the southern part of Nigeria on the 23rd of December, as planned. He drove out in a convoy of six of his most extravagant automobiles. Among them were a 1999 Lincoln Navigator, a limousine, a blue Porsche, a Lexus Jeep, a Cherokee Jeep, and a new Honda.

‘The strange thing about that fatal voyage was that Ezego was typically driven to Ihiala in a convoy from Enugu or Port Harcourt. However, he changed his mind due to the large number of individuals killed in aviation crashes during that time period. The outcome was disastrous for the mogul.

For inexplicable reasons, Ezego decided to get behind the wheel of his Lexus vehicle in the convoy and drive all the way from Lagos to Ihiala. However, the first issue arose somewhere along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.

‘The problem started when the Jeep Cherokee’s engine failed. Ezego, on the other hand, was in a hurry and couldn’t take the idea of missing his flight and being late. As a result, he desired to keep managing the jeep for as long as possible.

The vehicle, however, had fully broken down in the oil-rich state of Delta State by the time it arrived in Asaba. At this point, the situation was no longer entertaining. Ezego appeared to be in a state of anguish.

You are, however, aware of the dangers posed by Nigerian roadways. He didn’t want to leave his treasured car in the midst of nowhere in Asaba vulnerable to burglars. He persisted, though, on towing the broken-down vehicle by himself, with his Lexus pulling the Cherokee.

As a result, he was in the lead, with one of his sons driving the Cherokee. They continued on their journey till they came to a fork in the road between Ozabulu and Okija on the Onitsha/Owerri Road, where no one could dispute with the boss.

When death decided to expose his horrible figure, they were barely two kilometres from Ezego’s hometown, Ihiala in Anambra State, and their last destination at the time.

When he collided with a weakened piece of the road and immediately put on the brakes, the driver of the Cherokee following him was caught off guard and rammed his vehicle into Ezego’s expensive Lexus, sending the millionaire tumbling into a deep ditch alongside the highway.

According to some sources, the towing link between the two jeeps snapped, leading the Cherokee in the back to collide with Ezego’s Lexus, causing him to lose control and smash into that horrible ditch.

As soon as this happened, his convoy was thrown into turmoil. Those in his convoy tried desperately and unsuccessfully to pull him out of the ditch and get him medical care as soon as possible.

    HIS DEATH:

When they finally got Ezego out of the ditch, he had a big cut on his face and his face was heavily puffed up, marring his otherwise lovely appearance. He was transported to the nearby Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital (where Ezego incidentally made a donation of N15 million naira a few years before the accident).

Things gradually deteriorated, and there was no doctor on duty to make matters worse. By the time a medical practitioner arrived, Ezego was bleeding from his mouth, had an internal haemorrhage, and was in shock. All attempts to resuscitate him failed.

His family advised that he be immediately relocated to a better-equipped hospital in Port Harcourt.

It’s unclear if he died on the route to Port Harcourt or while being readied for a flight to Lagos from Port Harcourt at this point in his story.

Ezego died on December 26th, Boxing Day. At the time, he was only 34 years old.

    THE SCANDAL:

The scandals surrounding Ezego’s life lingered even after his death. Barnabas Igwe, his lawyer and executor of his testament, was slain on September 2, 2002, along with his wife, Abigail, just three years after Ezego’s death.

Ezego’s will was never read as a result, and the beneficiaries are unknown (at least as of January 2006)
