On Tuesday night, Karim Benzema set a new Champions League record, but it wasn’t enough to prevent Sheriff Tiraspol from shocking Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabeu.

Sheriff’s victory was the story of the night, and maybe the Champions League this season, as they took the lead twice to embarrass Real Madrid in front of their own fans and win their second group stage match.

Sheriff were drawn in a group with Real Madrid, Inter Milan, and Shakhtar Donetsk when the Champions League draw was made, and no one gave them a chance. However, after two games, they have a perfect record, three points ahead of the others.

Real Madrid had complete control of the game, but Sheriff made use of their opportunities, scoring with two of their four shots (three of which hit the target). The first came from Sheriff’s Jasurbek Yakhshiboev, who led a fast onslaught that saw them move from one end of the pitch to the other in a matter of seconds. Real Madrid were beaten by a fantastic cross from Cristiano for Yakhshiboev to head in past Thibaut Courtois after one ball down the centre.

As the game progressed and time began to run down, Madrid eventually had a chance to equalize when Vinicius was fouled in the area by Edmund Addo, prompting the referee to point to the spot. Following that, Benzema scored from the penalty spot for his 9th goal of the season in all competitions, and his 16th overall goal in just nine games.

In addition to being the equalizer, Benzema’s goal was significant for two reasons: first, he moved up to fourth outright on the list of the UCL’s all-time top goalscorers, one ahead of Real Madrid legend Raul with his 72nd goal, and now only three behind Lewandowski (Ronaldo and Lionel Messi have 135 and 121 goals, respectively).

But maybe even more amazingly, Benzema scored in the Champions League for the 17th consecutive season, a milestone neither Ronaldo nor Messi had accomplished at the time of his goal. Benzema would soon be joined by Lionel Messi, who scored his first goal for Paris Saint-Germain against Manchester City in a 2-0 triumph, but Benzema will always remain the first.

Many would have anticipated Real Madrid to press on and win, possibly by a margin of a few goals, making the game appear more comfortable than it was. Sheriff, on the other hand, would score the game’s third and final goal, when Sebastien Thill blasted a rocket first-time into the top corner, leaving Courtois helpless.

The goal was celebrated not just by Sheriff players, staff, and fans, but also by those watching from across the world, who were witnessing one of the biggest Champions League upsets in history. Naturally, there was a lot of discussion regarding Real Madrid’s participation in the unsuccessful European Super League.
