PLAYER RATINGS AS BAYERN DISCIPLINE UNION BERLIN

    Bayern

    Manager

    Julian Nagelsmann (7)

Rang the changes and got his team selection and tactics spot on. Deserves huge praise for helping Leroy Sané rediscover his best form. Should have substituted Stanišić for Pavard a lot earlier.

    Goalkeeper

    Manual Neuer (6.5)

Should have done better for Niko Giesselmann’s goal. Other than that mistake it was a good performance from Bayern’s captain dealing with everything else Union threw at him.

    Defenders

    Alphonso Davies (7.5)

His speed is such an asset and is developing a troublesome partnership with Sané. Caused Union problems down the left attacking the space left by Sané who drifted inside.

    Lucas Hernández (6)

Rarely tested till the second half and dealt with everything. Taken off on the 69th minute with an injury and hopefully, it’s not serious.

    Niklas Süle (4.5)

Needlessly booked on 30 minutes for catching Sheraldo Becker with a clumsy clearance. Poor marking allowed Sheraldo Becker to get in behind and it could have been 3-2 going into half-time if it wasn’t for the linesman’s flag. At fault for Union’s second letting Kevin Behrens get past him way too easy. A liability at times.

    Josip Stanišić (5)

Should have done better dealing with Genki Haraguchi’s cross that led to Union’s goal in the first half. Targeted by Union in the second half and a poor back pass allowed Becker to test Neuer. Not ready to challenge Pavard for the starting role who replaced him after 69 minutes.

    Midfielders

    Joshua Kimmich (6.5)

Good performance from the future Bayern captain. Tidy in possession and set the tempo in the first half. Put under pressure by Union’s midfield in the second half and struggled a bit.

    Corentin Tolisso (6.5)

Solid game in the middle of the park. Didn’t impress but didn’t do too much wrong either. Subbed off on 69 minutes.

    Thomas Müller (9)

Credited with three assists today. Outstanding touch to steer the ball past Luche and find Sané at the back post for Bayern’s third. Clever touch to create the space for his goal. Never gives up.

    Forwards

    Leroy Sané (8)

Wins the penalty in the 13th minute with his shot striking Paul Jäckal on the arm. Drifted inside causing Union’s backline problems all afternoon with his excellent movement. Sané made it 3-0 on 35 minutes with a tap in at the back post. Bayern’s most dangerous player in the first half. Subbed off on 62 minutes for Jamal Musiala.

    Kingsley Coman (7)

Excellent with the ball at his feet but struggled to convert his dribbles into goals in the first half. Smashed a rocket into the top corner on the 60th minute for Bayern’s fourth giving Luthe absolutely no chance. Replaced in the 79th minute by Serge Gnabry.

    Robert Lewandowski (8)

Made it 1-0 from the penalty spot sending Andreas Luthe the wrong way with his stuttering technique. Brilliant turn on 22 minutes to draw the foul from Robin Knoche on the edge of Union’s 18-yard box. Slotted the freekick perfectly into the far corner to make it 2-0.

Majestic vision to slip Sané in with his back to goal. Would have been one of the assists of the season if it went in. Brilliant performance from the world’s best Number 9.

    Substitutions

    Jamal Musiala (6)

An outstanding talent who impresses every time he’s on the pitch.

    Marcel Sabitzer (6)

Tidy in possession and helped Bayern see the game out.

    Benjamin Pavard (6.5)

Brought on to shore up the right side of Bayern’s defense and did a good job.

    Dayot Upamecano (7)

Brilliant surging run from his own half to set Müller up for Bayern’s fifth. Will do his confidence the world of good after his poor performance midweek.

    Serge Gnabry N/A

Came on in the 79th-minute when the game was over.

MAN OF THE MATCH — THOMAS MÜLLER

Three assists and a goal for the Raumdeuter who was brilliant all afternoon. Never stopped working and chased down every lost cause. Perfect response to the 5-0 defeat in midweek.
