Ndidi set to return against Spartak Moscow

Rodgers explains why Ndidi did not feature in Leicester City's 2-0 loss to Arsenal | Goal.com

Wilfred Ndidi is set to make his first start in almost a month against Spartak Moscow on Thursday, and Brendan Rodgers feels the Nigerian midfielder’s comeback would help the club’s defensive play.

The 24-year-old hasn’t played since suffering a hamstring injury in Leicester’s 2-2 draw with Burnley at the King Power Stadium in September.

As a result, he was unable to play in Nigeria’s 2022 World Cup qualifying doubleheader against the Central African Republic in October.

Due to a hamstring injury, Ndidi has missed City’s last seven games in all competitions, but he was on the bench for the Foxes’ 2-0 loss to Arsenal.

Despite the fact that City only lost two games during the Nigerian’s absence, they conceded 13 goals in those games, indicating that their defensive problems have yet to be resolved.

City has only preserved one clean sheet in the Premier League this season, against Wolves on the opening day, while conceding the fifth-most goals in the league.

Asked if Ndidi could help sort those issues, Rodgers said, “Hopefully. He’s just trained this week. He was one that if we needed him for 15 or 20 minutes maximum, that was our plan, but chasing the game (against Arsenal) there wasn’t that need to put him on.

“It’s great to have him back and available and we’ll see how his fitness looks over the coming days.”

In the meantime, the former Genk midfielder has been nominated for Transfermarkt’s Premier League Player of the Season award for the 2020/21 season.

Emiliano Martnez, Illan Meslier, Nick Pope, Alphonse Areola, Ederson, Edouard Mendy, Ruben Dias, Joao Cancelo, Wesley Fofana, Luke Shaw, John Stones, Harry Maguire, Ilkay Gundogan, and Kevin De Bruyne are among the players who contest the Nigerian.

Bruno Fernandes, Tomas Soucek, Mason Mount, Harry Kane, Mohamed Salah, Heung-min Son, Jack Grealish, Riyad Mahrez, and Dominic Calvert-Lewin are among the other players on the list.
