Messi, Neymar and Mbappe underperform on their debut together
The game between Paris Saint-Germain and Club Brugge, out of the eight games on Wednesday, would have drawn the most attention. The game was the first appearance of the offensive trident of Neymar, Kylian Mbappe, and Lionel Messi since the latter’s summer transfer from Barcelona.
The trio was anticipated to blow Brugge away, but their performance was disappointing.
Mbappe was the star of the show, and he contributed to the opening goal by turning his opponent inside out and cutting the ball back to Ander Herrera, but that was it. While Messi struck the crossbar with a first-half attempt but also gave the ball away in the build-up to Club Brugge’s equalizer, Neymar never really got into the game in an influential manner (though it would be harsh to blame him given the time that passed).
Any hopes of the trio putting on a show in the second half were dashed five minutes after the interval when Mbappe was forced off due to injury. This isn’t ideal.
