Marcus Rashford to be included in GCSE media studies course

    Rashford

Pupils will study the footballer’s usage of social media to raise awareness about social and racial issues that he is passionate about.

Pupils will study Marcus Rashford’s well-praised use of social media to further his campaign against child food poverty and encourage the UK government to expand free school meals as part of their GCSE media studies programme.

The Manchester United and England footballer has received praise for his social justice campaigns, which include combating racist abuse and launching a book club to improve disadvantaged children’s reading skills, and his use of social media has been crucial in spreading his message and influencing the debate.

From September, students studying AQA media studies will be able to learn about Rashford’s online presence and social media communications, as well as how he has successfully engaged fans. They will also gain a better understanding of the social and racial issues that he is passionate about.

Exam boards are diversifying their qualifications as part of a larger attempt to make them more relevant to and representative of current pupils. AQA has formed an equality, diversity, and inclusion expert panel to examine representation in the curriculum and tests.

The inclusion of the player on the course, according to Sandra Allan, head of AQA’s creative arts curriculum, will excite and motivate students.

“Marcus Rashford is one of the most influential and inspirational young people in the UK, so students can learn a huge amount from how he uses social media to make a real impact,” said Allan.

“It’s not just an opportunity for them to learn about social media – it’s also a great way to learn about important social and race issues as part of our commitment to equality, diversity and inclusion in the curriculum.”

Rashford’s social media advocacy was critical in his effort to persuade politicians to provide free school meals for underprivileged students in England during the pandemic’s school holidays, which resulted in a series of humiliating government U-turns. Leaders in the public relations business have since labelled him as one of the country’s top lobbyists.

Media studies courses have been vilified and rejected as a “soft” subject, but Allan believes there has never been a better time to take one that would help students build their creative, analytical, research, and communication abilities.
