Gary Lineker has revealed that Man Utd executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward, who lives next door to the former England international, confirmed Cristiano Ronaldo’s signing in his back garden.
Over the summer, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer bolstered his squad with three superstar signings: Jadon Sancho, Raphael Varane, and, of course, Cristiano Ronaldo, who returned to Manchester United for £17 million from Juventus.
Football’s all-time international goalscorer has scored five goals in only six games in all competitions since returning to Old Trafford, 12 years after leaving to join Real Madrid.
Messi left Barcelona for PSG, Grealish became the most expensive British player ever, Aguero left City after ten years of record-breaking performances, and Ramos said his goodbyes to Madrid.
Ronaldo’s departure appeared to be a power shift in the EPL, and former England striker Lineker has now revealed that one of the league’s most massive moves took place in his back garden, with next-door neighbour Woodward confirming the sale.
“I’ll put my cards on the table,” Lineker told BBC Sport: “Ed Woodward’s a good friend of mine and he’s my neighbour. He signed Ronaldo when he was in my garden!
“It was awesome. I knew when he walked in and he was on the phone to [Ronaldo’s agent Jorge] Mendes or someone. I hope I’m not giving too much away here, but he did sign him, so… yeah!
“I’ve got a fantastic picture of him on the phone with him in the back garden, which I might share one day with his permission.”
Ronaldo has made quick work of regaining his place among the goals since his return to Old Trafford. Despite only appearing in four Premier League games this season, one of which was as a second-half substitution, Ronaldo has the fifth-highest expected goals (xG) in the league, with 3.48, and has already scored three goals.
He’s carried that form into the Champions League, scoring in a 2-1 loss to Young Boys and a 2-1 triumph over Villarreal in which he scored in the 95th minute to give Man Utd a famous victory over the Europa League champions.
