Lady recounts how police officers assisted her when her car broke down in Lagos
After her automobile broke down in Lagos, a Nigerian woman described how police officers assisted her.
@calabarberry described them as “excellent police officers” who “totally assisted her” and “noticed” that her “fan” was not working. She went on to say that they didn’t take anything from her and that they sympathized with her. ”
This is contrary to the popular critics that state that at all levels of the police force in Nigeria, there is a severe problem with corruption. Senior police officials pilfer massive quantities of public monies from the top down. For instance, in 2012, the former Inspector General of Police, Sunday Ehindero, was charged with embezzling 16 million Naira and was found guilty.
Meanwhile, on the lower levels, police officers take money from the people on a regular basis, and crime victims must pay bribes before the police would handle their cases. Officers extortion is so ingrained in Nigeria that Nigerians are more likely to encounter police demanding bribes than upholding the law, according to a 102-page report by Human Rights Watch. Nigeria’s political situation is understandable.
