Luis Suarez has taken a barely veiled dig at Luuk de Jong, his Barcelona centre-forward successor, who has struggled to find his feet since joining the club from Sevilla in the summer.
Suarez, 34, left Barca last year when Koeman dismissed him over the phone in a now-famous 40-second conversation. Following that, he joined Atletico Madrid, where his 21 goals helped the team win La Liga for the first time since 2014.
Suarez slammed Koeman for his handling of the matter last summer, accusing him of “lacking the attitude” to tell him straight out that he wasn’t in his plans, instead of delaying and eventually telling him over the phone.
Since then, Barca has struggled on and off the field, with their devastating financial problems culminating in Messi’s departure, and those disturbances off the field hurting the players on the field, with the club having a horrible start to this season.
Griezmann also left the club in the summer, while Aguero is yet to make an appearance for his new club due to an injury, forcing Koeman to purchase De Jong from Sevilla until the Argentine returns.
He was not particularly prolific in Andalusia, scoring only 6 La Liga goals in his first season and only 4 last season, and he has struggled to find form in Catalonia, scoring just once in six appearances across all competitions.
Speaking to Gerard Romero on Twitch, Suarez was asked about De Jong’s slow start at the Camp Nou, to which he responded: “As the coach says, he’s better than Neymar.”The comment was in reference to Koeman’s suggestion that De Jong is a more threatening presence from deliveries than Neymar.
“When there’s a cross, Luuk is more dangerous than Neymar,” Koeman told NOS last month.
