How Man City’s midfield maestro, Rodri, massacred Everton

    Rodri

At the Etihad, Manchester City dominated Everton 3-0, thanks in part to a Rodri midfield masterpiece.

The win takes Pep Guardiola’s side to within three points of Chelsea at the top of the Premier League standings, and it was a bold return to form after their loss to Crystal Palace in their last match. City was without Kevin de Bruyne for Covid-19, but they made light work of a mediocre Everton side.

Of course, every City player was outstanding. From Raheem Sterling, who scored the game’s first goal with a sublime finish, to Joao Cancelo, who set him up with a superhuman ball, to youthful James McAtee, who had an eight-minute cameo packed with potential and excitement.

Rodri, on the other hand, stood head and shoulders above the rest. City’s own players, Gary Neville on the Sky broadcast, and, well, everybody who saw the game, nominated him for the man of the match.

This season, the Spaniard has pushed his already great game to new heights as he takes command of Manchester City’s midfield. He’s evolved into the midfield maestro Pep Guardiola has long desired, the heir to the tradition started by Sergio Busquets at Barcelona and perpetuated by Xabi Alonso at Bayern Munich. The latest in a long series of legends.

Rodri was the star of the show against Everton, turning the ball so quickly that the Toffees never had a chance. He had 123 touches, the most passes attempted and completed (108/115 @ 94 percent), and the fourth-most passes in the last third of the game (33). In addition to making an interception and creating a single chance, he won 3 out of 3 aerial duels and 2 out of 3 tackles.

Oh, and he also scored the game’s second goal. City’s powerful but jittery 1-0 lead was turned into one of their overpowering 2-0 victories. Seriously, this goal was incredible, reminding me of Vincent Kompany’s goal against Leicester at the conclusion of last season.

After a City attack came to a halt, the ball bounced out to Rodri, who approached the ball approximately 30 yards from goal and leathered it. He made a finer connection than the last jigsaw piece fitting into place, and he launched that thing like the Saturn V rocket.

The ball flew from his foot with the same speed and fury as a Mike Tyson hook, and it was just as lethal. Jordan Pickford would have been unable to stop it even if he had full-size human arms, such was the sweetness and power of this incredible strike.

Following Rodri’s goal, the game devolved into shambles as City tried to come up with the most ludicrous ways to score. Bernardo Silva added a third goal, and Raheem Sterling skewed a sitter into Pickford’s arms.

As the final whistle came, City knew they owed their victory to their midfield maestro, their unique Spaniard, the obscenely attractive Rodri. With him at the heart of the midfield, Pep Guardiola’s side can only go so far this season.
