Shocking! Gunmen Reportedly Kidnapped Former Akwa Ibom Senator, Nelson Effiong
Nelson Effiong, a former senator from Akwa Ibom State, was reportedly kidnapped by gunmen in Uyo on Monday.
Odiko McDon, the state police spokesperson, said on Planet FM in Uyo that they had received a report of the incident.
“The CP has ordered an investigation into the matter,” Mr MacDon, a superintendent of police, said.
“I believe that in no distant time we will get more information on it. But as I speak, yes, we have received that report and we are working to ensure he can be rescued,” he added.
Mr Effiong was allegedly kidnapped at a bar by armed men in a Toyota Camry car.
As of the time of filing this report, his kidnappers had not made contact with his family.
From 2015 to 2019, the former senator represented Akwa Ibom South District in the Senate. Prior to that, he was the speaker of the Akwa Ibom House of Assembly.
He is a senior member of the All Progressives Congress.
Kidnapping for ransom has become a common crime in most Nigerian states, with criminal gangs targeting schoolchildren and students, politicians, and anyone else they can place a monetary value on.
