The Spinal Cord Injuries People Association of Osun has called on governments, corporate organisations, and philanthropists to come to the aid of persons with spinal cord injuries in order to save their lives, saying they should not only be remembered during political campaigns alone.
Olayemi Lucky Adeleye, the representative of the Osun Association, called for the awareness of the situation of individuals with spinal cord injuries during a program held in Osogbo on Sunday.
Adeleye noted that spinal cord injuries in Nigeria are becoming more common, with more people being affected due to road accidents and/or side effects of medical complications.
He revealed that it does not provide that Nigeria has access to therapy, welfare, rehabilitation, and societal reintegration for people with spinal cord injuries.
He stressed that colostomies face various kinds of challenges with various categories of backbone injuries, such as abnormal passages.
Adeleye noted that these challenges were medical, housing, accessibility challenges, and need for caregivers.
In his words, “There are some persons with spinal cord injuries who cannot afford reconstructive surgeries, accommodation and cannot afford to pay for caregivers who will tend to them.
“We are using this medium to call out to passionate Nigerians, individuals, corporate bodies, and organisations to come to our aid. We also call on the government to include people with spinal cord injuries for consideration, provision, and support in government welfare programmes.
“We have a right to live as citizens of the country and also deserve to be supported and not only approached during election periods alone.”
He explained that people with spinal cord injuries were helpless which had promoted the need for them to raise such consciousness amongst the people.
