Couple Arrested In Akwa Ibom For Poisoning 10 Year Old Son To Death
A couple Rita Umoh and her husband, Akan Umoh, have been arrested by the Akwa Ibom State Police Command for allegedly poisoning his 10-year-old son to death over a witchcraft allegation.
SP Odiko Macdon, the command’s spokesperson, said in a statement on Tuesday, September 14, that the duo was apprehended by detectives from the Abak division following a tip-off.
“On the 29th of August, 2021, at approximately 4:30 pm, relying on information received from one Mfon Francis of Ekpat Iduot village, one Akan Jimmy Umoh and his wife Rita Jimmy Umoh of the same address conspired and poisoned to death her stepson, one Master Savior Jimmy Umoh, a 10-year-old boy on the allegation of witchcraft,” the statement read.
“Detectives of Abak Division swiftly responded and arrested the duo of Akan and Rita Jimmy Umoh who are father and step-mother of the deceased.
“During interrogation, suspects admitted to administering a poisonous concoction called “Evil Beans” on the child to remove witchcraft, which they claimed was the cause of their economic misfortunes and health challenges, including the poor academic performance of his half-siblings, according to prophecy.
A search of the house revealed the stepmother’s boldly written inscription on the wall, “Saviour is the witch of this house.” While the corpse was being removed and deposited in the mortuary for autopsy, photographs were taken.
“The CP has assured that the perpetrators of these crimes will be prosecuted and has urged members of the public to be vigilant and do well in providing timely information to the Police and Sister Security Agencies, which will aid in the reduction of crime and criminality.
