Collapsed Ikoyi Structure Was Going For N2.85 Billion Per Apartment

    Ikoyi building collapse

According to web ads, luxury apartments in the 21-story building that fell on Gerrard Road in Ikoyi, Lagos, were being sold for $5 million per apartment (N2.85 billion at the current exchange rate of N570/$).

According to a flier for the residential project, 65 percent of the penthouses, each worth $5 million, had been sold prior to its collapse.

Other ads, however, stated that there were other low-priced flats available for $1.2 million (N684 million).

The structure was billed as “Luxury in the Sky” on an internet flyer. Prior to the collapse, it was 80 percent complete and scheduled to open in 2022.

It’s unknown when the site’s construction began. Some of the 21 levels were allegedly set aside for office space. On Monday evening, a spokeswoman for the building’s owner, Fourscore Heights Limited, could not be reached for comment.

The fallen edifice was one of the many high-rise constructions that had sprouted up in recent years to adorn the skyline of Lagos’ opulent Ikoyi neighbourhood. On Monday afternoon, scores of people were believed to be trapped on the construction site after the building fell.

Although it is unknown how many individuals were trapped inside the building when it fell, social media postings claim that the building’s owner and a few other workers were inside when it collapsed.

As of Monday night, at least three bodies had been retrieved from the wreckage, and search and rescue efforts for the other victims had increased.

According to its proponents, it included “open outdoor recreation with outdoor Television Gym Etc, Swimming Pool, four Bedroom maisonettes, flats, duplexes, and penthouses.”
