Bruno changes the game as United beat Villarreal to qualify in the UCL

    Bruno
From the bench, Bruno Fernandes transformed the game as Manchester United defeated Villarreal 0-2 to go to the Champions League round of 16.

The Portuguese came on as a substitute at the start of the game. It was surprising to see Michael Carrick sit the team’s top player in his first game as interim manager, and United’s performance for an hour basically looked like a team lacking its best player and leader.

The Red Devils were rudderless in El Madrigal, and if Aaron Wan-Bissaka hadn’t done such a fine job denying Arnaut Danjuma any 1-v-1 success, and David de Gea hadn’t made a couple of superb stops, they would have been thrown in a very deep hole.

Sure, Sancho was playing well, but no one else was. Ronaldo, who was playing at a stadium where he had previously scored seven goals, looked every bit his 36 years as he strolled around the field.

Then, in the 66th minute of the game, Bruno and Rashford replaced Donny and Martial. And it was as if someone flipped a switch because United gained control of the game almost immediately.

Fernandes exudes authority, and every United player appeared to be a step sharper as a result.
They were slamming into tackles and stopping Villarreal’s runs. McTominay and Fred, who had previously struggled to string two passes together, suddenly began threading wonderful little passes through the Villarreal press.

With a wonderful bit of pressuring on Etienne Capoue, Fred, in particular, came to life and provided the opening goal. The Brazilian regained possession of the ball, and it dropped to Cristiano Ronaldo, who sprang to life, scored United’s sixth consecutive Champions League goal by lofting it over the onrushing Geronimo Rulli. His eighth goal at El Madrigal, his fifteenth goal against Villarreal, and his 140th goal in the Champions League.

United was now preparing to cook. The possibility of Bruno Fernandes’ laser passes behind the lines of defence, finding the amazing pace of Marcus Rashford and preventing Villarreal from really pushing forward and overwhelming the Red Devils, was present every time they were in possession.

Everyone was improving their game. Fred got the ball back and linked with Cristiano Ronaldo before McTominay freed the Portuguese, who found Marcus Rashford, who found Bruno Fernandes, whose gorgeously exquisite touch put the ball into the path of Jadon Sancho, who stepped up and rattled the ball into the top corner of the net. Bang. 0-2. The game is over.

Bruno’s contribution also made him the first player for an English team to record an assist in the first five Champions League games. And, of course, Cristiano’s goal made him the first English player to score in the first five Champions League games.

It’s debatable whether this was always Michael Carrick’s game plan for his management debut, and in truth, United was lucky to get to the hour mark level on the night. But when Fernandes came on, everything changed.

Regardless of Cristiano Ronaldo’s goals or Paul Pogba’s maverick talent, Bruno Fernandes is Manchester United’s finest player. He is the side’s leader, organizer, and heart and soul. When he isn’t on the field, United look terrible. When does he play? Magic is frequently the result. In every game, the Red Devils aim to have a puncher’s chance.
