I would have stated this time last year that picking Arsenal’s best team would be difficult because we were suffering injuries left, right, and centre.
But, given that Arteta has brought in his own players over a previous couple of summers, and our injury list appears to be significantly decreased, I believe we can reasonably conclude that he understands how he wants the squad to evolve in the future.
Obviously, the international break will have an impact on Arteta’s options, but with a major test against Arsenal icon Patrick Vieira coming up when Crystal Palace visits, I think it will be interesting to see which XI we think would be our best team if everyone is fit.
Regardless of our own preferences, everyone agrees that Ramsdale is a superior alternative to Leno right now, so I believe he chooses himself.
In my mind, the backline is just as evident; Tomiyasu, Gabriel, White, and Tierney all appear to be locked in, but based on what I’ve seen of Tavares, Tierney needs to stay fit or he may be relegated in the future.
Xhaka is a controversial midfielder, but when he’s on form, he’s the ideal partner for Thomas Partey in the middle. With the Swiss out injured, I’m hoping Lokonga can step up and claim the starting spot, but he’ll have to work on his consistency.
I’d like to see Pepe get more playing time after his strong showing at the end of last season, but it appears Arteta is sticking with the young trio of ESR, Ode, and Saka.
Another big decision is between Aubameyang and Lacazette, but I’ll go with Auba because Laca is more of a creator than a finisher…
So here’s what I came up with…
Tomiyasu… Gabriel… White… Tierney
Smith-Rowe… Odegaard… Saka
So do you agree with that analysis? What is your best team?
