5 things we learnt from Leicester City win

    Leicester City

    1. Leicester take control, for now

Due to the intense competition in Europa League Group C, Leicester City entered tonight’s encounter against Legia with only 5 points. However, they proceeded to annihilate Legia Warsaw 3-1 to capitalize on Napoli’s setback on Wednesday and seize complete control of the group, finishing first with 8 points.

Of course, the scheduling has not been kind to them because they now have to travel to Napoli, to the historic Stadio Diego Armando Maradona, and get a result on matchday six. If the Legia-Spartak match ends in a draw, they could qualify as group champions with a point. A win would ensure their progression, but a loss would knock them out of Europe entirely!

    2. Schmeichel chasing records

Kasper Schmeichel made his 440th competitive game for Leicester tonight, and he did so in style by saving a penalty. The rebound was, of course, put away, but Schmeichel’s save was spectacular and demonstrated his continuing quality.

Schmeichel now trails Steve Walsh by 10 appearances and Mark Wallington and Hugh Adcock by 20. Assuming he avoids injury, Kasper Schmeichel will be third all-time in Leicester appearances by the conclusion of the season. While Adam Black (557) and Graham Cross (599) are definitely out of reach, Schmeichel is firmly establishing himself as Leicester City’s greatest goalie.

    3. Hungry Maddison

James Maddison scored and assisted against Legia (his goal was spectacular, as he performed fantastic Cruyff Turn before rifling it home), and when questioned after the game if he had point to prove, Maddison was emphatic that he did not.

“I don’t think I had a point to prove but I wanna get back to my best. And tonight I showed that, goal and assist as you said. Affecting the game going forward, that’s what I’m best at.”

There’s little doubt that Maddison had point to prove, even if he didn’t believe it himself. Because, of course, he’s fallen out of favour as sure starter recently. But his demeanour both on the field and in the post-game interview demonstrates why he will undoubtedly reclaim his normal starting role soon. This is player that is hell-bent on winning.

As he said himself: “I’m hungry, y’know?

    4. Luke Thomas needs more game time:

Leicester’s youthful left-back was a bright spark on the field. His aggressive surges forward and combination play with Harvey Barnes made the Foxes dangerous on the left side, with the majority of the positives generated by the hosts coming from their flank. Simultaneously, Thomas was defensively responsible and made many interventions to prevent his opponents, despite being booked for a cheap foul.

    5. Harvey Barnes and Patson Daka on fire:

Barnes was the Foxes’ most dangerous attacking threat on Thursday night, and he was a livewire throughout the game. The 23-year-old caused the visitors numerous difficulties with his pace, direct running, and movement, allowing up numerous opportunities for his teammates. He set up Daka for the first goal and had a chance to score himself. Finished with two critical passes, tying for the game-high.

The Zambian international put forth a good, solid all-around performance. Daka’s movement and running kept the Legia defence on their toes, while his hold-up play was also outstanding, with one such instance resulting in his goal. He also attempted to press the opposing defenders from above.
