5 Foods That Naturally Whiten Your Teeth
Everyone dreams of having a bright, million-dollar smile. White teeth make you look younger and more attractive. Not surprisingly, they also make you look healthier, more presentable and confident. Stained, yellow teeth can add years to your face, making you look tired, worn out and even unhygienic. Everyone craves white teeth, but not everyone can afford the bleaching treatments it takes to get them. Also, bleaching your teeth can weaken them greatly. There are a number of ways that you can naturally whiten your teeth. They use everyday items that are cheap, safe, free from side effects and easily available. Here are 5 natural ways to get whiter teeth:
- Yogurt, milk and cheese
Dairy products contain lactic acid, which may help protect teeth against decay. A study in the journal Dentistry found kids who ate yogurt four times per week had less tooth decay than kids who didn’t eat yogurt. Researchers think proteins in yogurt may bind to teeth and prevent them from attack by harmful acids that cause cavities. Hard cheeses are best for whitening since they help remove food particles as well.
- Sesame seed oil
Ayurvedic medicine is known for using a number of different oils to treat health issues. Oil pulling or swishing oil in your mouth is an age-old technique used by many people to get whiter teeth and improve oral health. While you can use coconut, almond, or olive and still see results, sesame seed oil will work much faster than the others. This process reduces plaque formation, reverses decay and cures halitosis. Chewing sesame seed before brushing your teeth will also whiten teeth by polishing the surfaces, gradually removing stubborn stains.
- Shiitake mushrooms
These mushrooms are commonly used in Chinese or Japanese cooking. They contain a substance called ‘lentinan’ that is a natural sugar with antibacterial properties. Research has shown that extracts from these mushrooms helped eliminate bacteria, which can reduce stains caused by plaque in the mouth. The best part? These mushrooms only fight harmful bacteria and not beneficial oral bacteria, making them even better than everyday mouthwashes.
- Fruit
Fresh fruit can dramatically whiten teeth and remove stains. Apples, strawberries, pineapples and other citrus fruit and their peels are effective natural whiteners as they contain a number of enzymes that can break down plaque and stains that make the teeth appear yellow. However, the fruits contain acids that can wear down the enamel, so drink plenty of water after eating them, and don’t brush your teeth immediately afterward.
- Green tea
Green tea is known for having a myriad of health benefits. Green tea is a lighter colour and so will not stain teeth like coffee and other teas. To top it off, researchers discovered that people who regularly drink green tea have healthier teeth and gums. Also, the tea can actually reverse tooth decay and gum diseases such as dental caries and gingivitis.
Getting white teeth are nothing impossible. Using natural substances will give you a brighter smile in no time at all, without any dangerous side effects.
