4 people killed, many injured as herdsmen attack Enugu community
In two villages in the Nimbo community, Uzo-Uwani Local Government Area of Enugu State, at least four people have reportedly been slashed to death by suspected herdsmen.
The incident occurred around 2 a.m. on Monday, July 26th, while most people were still sleeping.
Several people were alleged to have been seriously hurt in the incident, and ten people were reported missing.
According to reports, the trouble began on Sunday afternoon when herders were prevented from grazing their cattle at a farm village in the area, resulting in intense arguments between farmers and herders.
It was also discovered that the farmers afterwards pursued the herders and their animals in order to prevent future crop destruction.
The herders eventually regrouped and conducted a revenge attack on the village, murdering at least four people in the early hours of Monday, according to The Nation.
A source in the village identified simply as Stephen told the reporters that the villagers were still in search of about 10 people missing after the attack was over.
Stephen said: “Our people were in their houses Sunday afternoon when some people ran back to inform them that some herders came with their cattle to graze in their farm settlement. But our people went there to ask them to leave because they had already destroyed some crops on the farms.
“In the course of this interruption, a heated argument ensued that led our people to chase them away from the settlement. Remember that herdsmen killed our people in 2016 when they invaded this community. So, our people didn’t expect anything since they have left in peace.
“Unfortunately this morning they invaded the community and killed more than four people. The number could rise because we are still searching for 10 of our people. We also don’t know how many will survive in the hospital.”
Stephen further disclosed 3 people were seriously wounded and have been taken to the hospital for medical treatment.
